Your home shouldn't be without a garden! If it is, you are depriving yourself of many benefits. For instance, a garden helps prevent erosion, serves as a food source for your family if it is a food garden or adds more beauty to your home if it's a flower garden. However, your garden type determines how well you enjoy your garden. For instance, in-ground gardens are prone to low fertility, especially comparing the complexity of Adelaide's soil and attack from rodents. But you won’t have such problems with raised garden beds, in which your garden sits on elevated soil.

4 Reasons You Should Consider Raised Garden Beds

We understand that raised garden beds are more costly than in-ground gardens. However, raised garden beds are better. Here's why :

  1. Soil control: It's common knowledge that a large part of the soil in Adelaide and its environs is highly acidic and shallow. You have to test the soil if it's suitable for gardening before you start. As such, having a typical garden won't yield much because of low soil fertility. But there's a solution to that - raised garden beds. Instead of relying on poor soil, you can buy fertile soil for your garden or add compost to the top of the soil for better plant growth in a raised garden bed.
  2. Reduced stress: Normal gardens require you to bend and till the soil regularly, as you have to nurture your plants for optimal growth. But there's no joy in straining your joints because you have a garden. If care isn't taken, this could lead to serious health issues. However, you don't have to go through that stress if you hire us to build garden bed walls! Since raised gardens are as tall as twelve inches, you can comfortably sit or stand to tend your plants. You're simply investing in your health.
  3. Weed & rodent control: Typical gardens are constantly bombarded by weeds which hinder plant growth and increase your stress, as you have to till them regularly to keep the weeds out. However, a raised garden bed can do that for you. You can even place a weed barrier in your raised garden bed for more effect. Also, a raised garden bed keeps out rodents. It's easier for rodents to enter your garden and eat your plants if it's in the ground, but if it's elevated, they can't.
  4. Aesthetics: Asides saving you from stress and keeping out weeds and rodents, you can landscape your environment with raised garden beds. Depending on the type of material, your house will stand out in the neighborhood, as we pay attention to aesthetic quality.

Raised Garden Bed FAQs

  1. How can I stop watermarks on my raised garden bed blocks? - The best way to do this is to cover your raised garden bed blocks with oil-based paint. This will prevent water stains and preserve the blocks' appearance. If there are watermarks on the blocks already, you can use a stain blocker (a combination of gloss and oil-based paint) to cover the marks. Also, we advise you to fix the cracks and fill the gaps that cause the watermarks.
  2. Does my raised garden bed need waterproofing? - If it's wooden, we advise you to waterproof it. Waterproofing your wooden raised garden bed makes it last longer and protects it from rot and moisture. However, not all sealants are safe. Ensure you use non-toxic sealants such as beeswax to waterproof your wooden raised garden beds. Your raised garden bed doesn't need waterproofing if it's not wooden.
  3. What soil should I fill my raised garden bed with? - We recommend a mix of organic compost, topsoil, and coarse sand. Also, the plants in your garden determine what you add to the soil. If you're growing plants that require acidic soil, you can add sulphur to the soil. If the plants require alkaline soil, you can add wood ashes to the soil. But if you can't mix the soil yourself, you can buy soil made explicitly for gardens from a local store.

  1. Do I need aggregate and drainage in my raised garden bed? - No, you don't have to. Putting aggregate such as crushed rocks at the bottom of your raised garden bed increases the water saturation and hinders good drainage. However, you need good drainage to promote healthy plant growth and prevent issues such as plant rot. You can incorporate drainage into your raised garden bed by drilling holes at the bottom, using liners, loosening the soil, etc.
  2. Do I need a license to build a raised garden bed? - No, you don't, as long as the raised bed is less than a metre in height and can't damage the surrounding property.
  3. Can you build a raised garden bed with no mortar? - Yes, we can. However, this is only possible if you want a low raised garden bed. If you want something deeper, we have to use mortar.
  4. What is the best height for a raised garden bed? - Usually, a raised garden bed should be between ten to twelve inches. But ultimately, it depends on your choice. If you have kids, a six-inch deep raised garden bed is okay. If you want it to be wheelchair accessible or you don't want to bend while tending your garden, you can build it as high as twenty-four inches.
  5. Is it easy to maintain my garden walls? - Yes, it is. We will build a sound drainage system in the walls to prevent them from retaining water and enhance their durability. You can also cover the walls with oil-based paint to ease weather effects.
